For Real.

As of yesterday, I’m back to the real life: books, powerpoint slides without an end, and marker packs in so many colours the rainbow would be jealous.

But if all goes well, this year won’t be the same as last year. I mean, not that last year was bad or anything, it is just that I want this year to be even better. (Who doesn’t? … You don’t have to answer that.) Anyway, part of this whole New Year’s Resolutions thing is to actually follow through with good intentions.

It’s day three. How many of you have already broken your resolutions? Be honest with yourself, because I know the vast majority of you have. Well, okay, maybe only a few of you have since it is only day three. I’ll give you a couple of weeks.

I actually did make resolutions this year. I intend on keeping all of them, despite some of them nearing the verge of insanity (in my already crazy mind). Why? Because if I don’t make the changes for a healthy life now, when will I? Life will only get harder and habits will only set firmer. When I see myself in the future, I don’t see someone who would rather grab a bag of potato chips over an apple. …Okay, I do but only one time out of ten or so.

Cheers to a new year, and a slightly modified Kristin.

First, I am cutting out sweets from my diet. In case you were wondering, my sweet tooth takes up most of my face. Sorry, Pinterest. Your dessert folder is going to have to be ignored until a friend needs a cake baked for them. No sugar in my oatmeal. Black coffee when possible. No birthday cake at birthday celebrations (unless it is my own, of course). Crazy, huh?! Here’s the remaining sanity in it: I will allow myself all the gum I can chew, breath mints when needed, honey (in HEALTHY things like my homemade granola, which is way to fantastic to give up), a rare energy drink if needed prior to an exam, and ONE serving of sweets on holidays. Yes, my birthday is a holiday. No, Ground Hog’s day is not a holiday, nor is Presidents Day.

Second, I am going to work out SIX hours per week. This one is going to be the hardest for me to keep, because I can’t guarantee that I have six hours to spend in a gym EVERY.SINGLE.WEEK. The point of this resolution is to find the time. And if you think about it, that is less than an hour if I decide to go everyday. That’s not bad at all.

Related to the last one, I am shooting for a goal of running 300 miles this year. That is completely doable at less than 1 mile per day, even when taking holidays off. The thing is that I really am not a fan of running unless they have happy colour powder to throw at me every kilometer I run. (Side note: I’m already registered for the Colour Run this year! If there is one in a city near you, DO IT!)

Thirdly, I want to do as many random acts of kindness as I can afford. Which, on a med student budget, probably is like three. Sadly, the thing that I realized, though, is that someday I will be able to pay it off. The person I help doesn’t likely have that same luxury. It can be overwhelmingly blinding to look at my bank account and see nothing for several years in the near future. Take those blinders off, miss. There will be money there. Those loans will disappear, no matter how ginormous of a number they get to be.

And lastly, do more artistic ventures. I probably (most likely) have said that I love to do various art projects, crafts, writing, poetry, things and stuff. Med school shouldn’t prevent me from doing things like that. I’ve accumulated hoarded nearly everything I need for any project in my supposed-to-be-a-studying-office-that-has-become-more-of-an-art room.

The best part? Now that I have told you, I have just made you all accountable for my goals, too.

Even better? If you tell me your resolutions, I will remind you like none other that you should probably be sticking with whatever your resolutions are. For real, you made them for a reason.

Guilt. Coffee. Insane.

image

Every time I check my E-mail to find a new follower or a like from a tried and true follower, I’m ridden with guilt. I’ve been so busy I’ve resorted to such large amounts of caffeine to stay awake that I could probably be admitted to an addiction center. Or maybe I could be admitted straight to the psych ward because I’m so crazy busy. When I disappear, harass me. The guilt will bring me back. I’ll grab another cup of coffee, and actually have a few minutes to enjoy it while creating something that doesn’t require full brain power. It sounds… relaxing.

Cheers to trying to take a few minutes to post something more frequently.

Beautiful Blogger Award and Life

Cheers to being back in school!

I feel like I should apologize for the significant lack of posting this summer, however, I don’t think I will. I’m happy that I took the time off; I’d like to hope that you are all happy that I didn’t post something just to post something for you.

I was also quite surprised to return to see two “Beautiful Blogger Award” nomination things waiting for me! I’d like to thank Jaimee and Mr. Weissel for nominating me, and I urge you to check out their sites as well.

Apparently there are rules to this game. So, I’ll nominate some of my favourites (in randomized order) to receive the beautiful blogger award as well, and then I tell you seven facts about myself.

http://fortheloveofnike.com/  I really wish I could long-term borrow all of her shoes. And probably her closet as well. *crossing fingers she has big feet like me*

http://brokenlightcollective.wordpress.com/ This is a site that is dedicated to various artists who have struggled with some sort of mental illness and care to document and share their struggles. All I can say is that there are some wonderful artists out there who are much stronger than I could ever be.

http://gaia365.wordpress.com/  His photos keep me in awe. There really isn’t much more to say.

http://ojproctor.wordpress.com/ I love his unique photography perspective. Not going to lie, he probably somewhat changed the way I look through a camera.

http://jdhascup.wordpress.com/ His blog fills me with wanderlust. And he makes me jealous that I am cooped up in a windowless classroom 98% of my day.

http://domesticdivamd.com/  Funny medical stories and there’s food?? Count me in!

I don’t get much time to read other people’s blogs, for some odd reason.

Now for seven facts, and I hope I don’t accidentally repeat any from my birthday facts post.

1. In high school I considered going to college to be a fashion designer. I also considered being a chiropractor.

2. I like to cook/bake in my free time. In fact, I recently made a homemade stuffed crust pepperoni pizza. Gosh, I love pizza.

3. I know I have mentioned this in the past somewhere on here, but I am a coupon-er. Like almost extreme coupon-er. I refuse to pay more than $0.50 for a tube of toothpaste or $1.oo for a bottle of shampoo/conditioner.

4. I wish there were more strong, positive female role models in the world to guide the girls growing up in today’s society. It makes me terribly sad that people look up to Snooki, the Kardashians, and Lindsey Lohan (She’s still around, right?). I want them to know that in the grand scheme of life, it doesn’t matter what colour your hair is, how white your teeth are, or what clothes you are wearing. You don’t need a boyfriend to be happy. You don’t need to put out to be loved. It even doesn’t matter how many facebook friends you have or how many people follow you on twitter or instagram. Spend your time doing things that do matter: helping others, education, and doing things that make you passionate about life.

5. I would like to train for a half marathon, and be ready to run one by this coming summer.

6. I may or may not have impulse purchased 22 new bottles of nail polish less than a week ago. I can hardly contain my excitement for when my packages arrive in the mail! (I have mentioned in the past that I kind of have an addiction. Do they have rehab for this sort of thing? It doesn’t really matter, because I wouldn’t want to go.)

7. Finally! I have been listening to heart sounds on my computer while I study to try learn them for the cardiology portion of my class. I’ve been listening to 10 second clips repeat themselves over and over and over again for around 8 hours a day.

Jeez, that got long! And now back to studying. Cardiovascular infectious disease day. Can’t wait.

Be Yourself, Love

If you aren’t the person I dreamt you would be, you can still be you, and I will love you just the same.

I Recommend Fun

I am procrastinating studying like a student properly should. The good news is, I made time to update this. The bad news is that I have had to re-arrange my study schedule to include more studying. Brilliant.

Aside from all that jazz, I made time for my first ever “race.” I ran The Colour Run 5K (Minnesota Race) this past weekend, and oh my goodness, there is a reason it is known as the Happiest 5K on the Planet. First off, there is no pressure to run the whole thing; it is not timed; there are no medals to be given. Secondly, is a 5K course that, at every kilometer, you run through this colour powder station to get all colourful. The first picture is a group of girls (that I don’t know) coming up to the first colour station: orange. The other stations were pink, yellow, and blue. By the end of the race, you are pretty colourful, but to top it off, they have a grand finale. We are each given our own little packages of colour powder that we throw at the same time, creating this rainbow of fun. The second picture is waiting for more runners to finish for the colour throw, and the last picture shows the very tail end of the finale. The third one is me being silly and documenting completing my first race. My last picture posted (https://nothinghurt.wordpress.com/2012/07/16/busy-busy-bee/) is what the ground we ran on looked like.

My pictures do it no justice. I do have excuses, but I will save them for myself. Google image it, but first be prepared to want to run a race. If that isn’t enough to convince you, watch this official video! Still aren’t convinced? (Why aren’t you convinced?!?) Well, I am here to inform you that on top of having a blast, you will be supporting a local charity. The Minnesota Race sponsored Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless.

Good cause, good exercise, good people, good fun. A girl like me couldn’t ask for more.

(I didn’t post a lot of photos from the race because I’m not sure how my friends and friends-of-friends feel about being posted on here. Next time I get a chance, expect photos of me!)

Sneaky Peak

This weekend was a rebellious weekend, and I’ve added a sneak-y peak as to why. I don’t have much time today to stop and chat, so you will all have to just live with what you are given. Suspense, if you want to call it that.

To The Real Weekends

With Immunology, Hematology, and Oncology out of the way, I am sure to catch up on sleep, a social life, exercise, and house cleaning. That is, until Monday when we complete our last week of Social and Behavioural Medicine. I have noticed that somewhere in the past six weeks, summer has snuck up on me while I have been hiding away in a dark corner of this med school. I’m crossing my fingers that the weather will cooperate this weekend and next week so I can go fill my camera, once again, with all the beautiful things in God’s Country up here. Until then, you will continue to see glimpses of flowers from the botanical garden.
